4. Methodology, learning tasks, syllabus and resources

4.1. Methodological overview

The methodology followed in this course is oriented towards the achievement of the learning objectives. In view of its instrumental nature, the methodology for this course is basically active and participative involving both individual tasks and group tasks which will enable the student to use the English language in a practical way as a tool for written and oral communication in the contexts and situations specified for the C1 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

4.2. Learning tasks

This is a 6 ECTS course organized as follows:

  • Theory sessions (0.4 ECTS: 10 hours): presentation, study and practice of the lexical, grammatical, discursive, sociolinguistic and strategic elements required to reinforce and consolidate oral and written comprehension and expression in the English language, starting from the B2.2 level and reaching the C1.1 CERL level.
  • Practice sessions (2.0 ECTS: 50 hours): the carrying out of learning activities designed to develop the main language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) by means of tasks requiring work performed individually or in groups, the solution of problems and cases, learning by projects and the use of ICT for English at the C.1.1 level. Class-time activities will also include the analysis of texts related to the literature, culture, linguistics and cinema of English-speaking countries as well as the acquisition of the English language and of the metalanguage used in the teaching/learning process.
  • Individual and group tutorials (0.4 ECTS: 10 hours): individual and group tutorials to provide students with learning techniques as well as advice on how to carry out individual or group tasks and supervision.
  • Autonomous work and study (1.2 ECTS: 30 hours): independent study in which the student should use personal work strategies to develop the main English language skills at the C1.1 level. Practical advice and orientation with regard to self-learning techniques will be provided in individual tutorials.
  • Other activities (1.8 ECTS: 45 hours): reading, audiovisual material, involvement in the virtual learning environment (Moodle/ADD)
  • Assessment tasks (0.2 ECTS: 5 hours): consisting of 5 parts: Reading Comprehension, Listening Comprehension, Use of English, Writing and Speaking (interaction and production) (C1.1 level CERL).

4.3. Syllabus

This course will address the following topics:

  • Topic 1. Self and identity
  • Topic 2. Communication and language
  • Topic 3. Media and technology
  • Topic 4. Gender roles and popular culture
